Dear A Simple Jew,...
I want to thank you for today's post titled 'one amongst many'. For a long time ive wished to wear a yarmulke all day, every day. I am a conservative Jew, if there's such a thing, but my heart longs for more of a connection to my Judaism and at times I feel wearing a yarmulke would be a good reminder to myself and those around me of who I am and what I stand for.
Having worked for the same company for many years, ive felt it to be a step too far to suddenly appear at work wearing a yarmulke and having to explain my 'sudden' religious stance. I know my bosses would feel uncomfortable about having to ask me about it and old clients may be as confused as my colleagues. I have worried about having to act more piously, maybe shedding some of my personality, not to attach a bad name to Jews as a whole.
However, having just recently started a new company, I have new clients and new colleagues and won't feel the need to explain myself (not that I should have to) and your post has explained some of what I feared. I am still nervous to take the step and express myself in such a physical way, if I cant commit to being more observant I don't want to wear a yarmulke without meaning, but your writing has given me a boost.
I would love to hear from you about this in more detail, hopefully my ramblings haven't taken up too much of your time, but this is an internal struggle I am trying to overcome.
With thanks, Shabbat shalom.
