Individualism & Breslov

Do you feel that Breslov is a more individualistic path than others? Does the community or “chaburah” (group) loom as large in Breslov Chassidus as elsewhere in the Chassidic world?

Rabbi Dovid Sears answers here.

  1. I would like to see other Chassidic groups explain their attitudes, toward and program for, personal growth. I'm sure these concepts are not foreign to any true Chassidim.

  2. Sorry about my misplaced comma above. Anyway, I'd like to add that many Chassidic movements seem to have changed their approach over many years, losing some spiritual vitality. Do you think that Breslov's policy of having manhigim but not traditional rebbeim has kept its focus more constant? Or has there been too much anarchy leading to a less consistent focus?

  3. The author states: "I don’t know if any Chassidic group stresses the inner path as much as Rebbe Nachman does."

With all due respect - rubbish. Chabad breathes "pnimiyut". In fact, the very name is an acronym that stands for Intellect, Understanding and Da'at, where Da'at menas it so becomes part of you that it guides your behavior. Even were Intellect and Understanding at lofty heights in an individual, unless internalized to control behavior, they remain superficial and abstract.

But if the man wants to enjoy his own community at the expense of misunderstanding another, so be it.
