Candles

I feel a certain sadness each night of Chanukah once the candles on the menorah burn out and the smoke rises upwards.

When a person passes away his neshoma returns to its source and the body remains behind, a mere container. Similarly, once the flame of the candles are extinguished, the menorah remains alone, lacking the element which allowed it to be used for a mitzvah.

I experience a similar feeling of wistfulness when the Shabbat candles burn out as well.

But our neshoma does return to it's source, maybe as the candles go out you can take comfort in the mitvot that is returning to Hashem like g"w we all will someday.
