Silence takes practice

Practicing silence is necessary in order to prevent one from saying things that will be regretted later. During an uncomfortable silence or pause one naturally has the inclination to want to speak. This is where one may stumble.

A G-d fearing person will not want to stay in the company of idlers or gossipers... If you are forced to be among idlers from time to time for the sake of peace, keep silent. Even though this is not desirable, it is the lesser of the evils.
