Tsunami

I am sitting here with tears in my eyes.

I just saw a picture of a mother crying with her dead children laying in front of her.

I can't even imagine.

Tsunami Relief Efforts

http://www.jewishthailand.com/templates/articlecco.html?AID=245832

Thailand is a key destination for thousands of Israeli backpackers who go there to relax after completing active duty in the Israeli Army.

Following the earthquake and tsunami that have destroyed hundreds of seaside towns in Asia and Africa leaving thousands dead, relatives of Israelis touring Thailand are anxious to hear about their loved ones. Chabad of Thailand headed by Rabbi Yosef C. Kantor, Chabad Shliach to Thailand and Rabbi of the local Jewish community has responded to the crisis by dispatching Rabbi Nehemya Wilhelm to the scene of the tragedy in Phuket and turning the three Chabad Houses of Thailand into crisis centers where Israelis can come and place phone calls home, or try to find their friends as of yet unaccounted for.

Chabad volunteers are standing by at the local hospitals to visit the injured and provide them with kosher food and any other help needed. The Chabad Rabbi's and their wives are also counseling the survivors who are in a state of emotional trauma.

With the help of an Israeli telecommunications company there are free international phone calls being offered to those who wish to call home and inform there loved ones of their whereabouts. The free internet service at the Chabad centers are functioning as usual.

Rabbi Wilhelm says that the Israeli Consul in Thailand, Yakov Dvir, contacted the Chabad House for help in locating hundreds of Israelis who are stranded in the ravaged seaside towns of Thailand.

In Ko Samui, Thailand, Chabad’s Rabbi Gaoni Maatuf says his Chabad House has fielded over 1,000 phone calls from Israel, trying to help families locate their relatives. Rabbi Maatuf notified Israelis in Ko Samui, which has not been affected by the quake, to contact their families back home as did Rabbi Hadad of Chabad in Chiang Mai.. Rabbi Maatuf was interviewed yesterday by Galei Tzahal, the IDF radio station, and later in the day, Israel’s Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom acknowledged that the Israeli Foreign Ministry has sought Chabad’s help in locating Israeli citizens in Thailand.

As the initial efforts of search and rescue wind down the grim work of identifying bodies and counseling bereaved families will keep the Chabad staff fully occupied in the immediate future.

To help Chabad of Thailand in their humanitarian mission in the aftermath of the Tsunami please send checks to Chabad of Thailand 96 Thanon Rambuttri, Bangkok Thailand 10200

(For US tax deductibility please write checks to American Friends of Chabad of Thailand)
