I've recently bought the same book, but I'm reading it rather slowly. I find academic writings on recent jewish history interesting, because it has such a different take on things. On the one hand the stories are familliar and beautiful, but the sense of kedusha and hashgocho protis, etc. is missing. On the other hand, by stripping the stories down a bit new aspects become apparent.
I think I heard that a lot of the "new" research had already been published in Kfar Chabad magazine, but didn't reach academia because of its more limited circulation. Not that I would know...
