When a Jew sings me a niggun, I can tell his level of yiras shamayim...
(Rebbe Yisrael Taub of Modzitz)
The Divrei Yisrael actually continues:
...and whether he is wise [chacham] or foolish [tipesh].
Another time he was travelling with his Chassidim, and stopped to hear a shepherd singing. He then explained: "Whoever sings, it's as if he's confessing [vidui]. A man's song is his vidui, and it's possible to recognize his essence through it. Whenever someone confesses, no matter who he is, one should stop to listen."
BTW, nice pics of the oil menoros. Here in Israel, just about everybody uses oil, and many of us use silver menoros with glass inserts. I like the floating wicks 'cause they're easy to use, even if they dirty up the glass inserts.
Jen: I agree!
Yitz: Thanks for the explanation on the Modzitz quote and the compliments on the pictures.
Dear ASJ,
A freilichen Hanukka to you and yours!!!
I remain,
Very Sincerely yours,
Alan D. Busch
The angle of that picture makes the menorah look like stage lights. Awesome photography job - is that another hobby of yours?
Alan: A freilechen Chanukah to you as well!!
MCAryeh: Nope...I was just playing around and like how it looked. Glad you liked it.
Yitz: Do you have any suggestions how to clean the glass inserts?
My wife is currently soaking them in a grease-cutting soap or detergent. She said that bleach definitely does NOT help. Will let you know how it turns out, bli neder!
