During World War II, this field used to contain a landing strip used by military aircraft. Later it became the site where Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. The pole in the middle of the field marks the spot of one of the three mass graves in the shtetl. This site was pointed out to me on the last day of my visit as we were heading back to Kiev and I did not have time to go out and visit this memorial.

So typical of the Ukrainian antisemites, they plant grass at the site of where Jews were murdered. Just like Babi Yar which today is park, where people go to play and walk their dogs without thinking about the people that were murdered there, a monument and plaque are all that remain to tell the story.

3Pillars: I too was shocked to see the casual disregard of Babi Yar in Kiev. In parts there are jogging trails that go over the site where over 33,000 people were murdered.

Actually, the story of what happened in Kiev is even worse. In the 50's the government planned to build a bunch of apartment buildings over Babiy Yar, and it was only the outrage of the rest of the world that stopped this plan from being actualized.

Just that one pole to mark a mass grave?! This picture just makes me so sad - and angry!

Yes. I don't know if there is a plaque at the site either.
