The Ramban was of the opinion that the laws of Shechita would not have applied yet and the patriarchs would only have been held to the Noahide restrictions. He posits that Avaraham's descendants would not adhere to Torah law more strictly than he himself did. That he, Avaraham was taught the Torah but only adhered to those laws that he had been directly commanded by Hashem. See the Ramban's commentary to Breishit 26:5
