The fact that Reb L"Y zal is wearing glasses indicates how old the pictures are. When he got older, RL"Y stopped wearing them!

He was such a talmid chakham and gibor (warrior)—and had such temimus (simplicity) too!

We need him so much now....I think I miss him. :-)

Dear Readers:

An interesting historical note -- if you look at one of the pictures in this set; you see a group around RYL and Reb Michal Dorfman.

That morning in 1979, word came from Uman (later proven to be incorrect) that the Russians were building and excavating the area of Reb Nachman z'tl's kever.

Actually, it was the apartments near the kever that were built then -- the ones the chassidim stay in now. A chosid went to Uman in middle of the night and made a mistake as to his exact location.)

Alarm bells rang once the news hit. That's what the talking was about that morning.

Amazing!
Was it really such a tiny minyan in those days, as it appears in the pictures?
Nowadays there are usually over 200 people (some claim that it's the biggest minyan vasikin in the world).

that was it -- 15-30 people.

but what people they were. RLY, reb shmuel shapiro, as RLY...

one of the pics has RLY folding his towel. The was his mikveh towel. he took it to shul, hung it on his bench to dry, and took it to the kosel with him.

He was very neat and mesudar, BTW.
