Naama is the daughter of Rabbi Eliyahu Kitov, zt"l, and a sister-in-law of the Rav of my Shul, as well as the aunt of a good friend of mine. She also commissioned a friend of our family, Miriam Zakon, to translate Rav Kitov's books of Chassidic stories ["Chassidim v'Anshei Ma'aseh"]

Targum Press has put out a new book called In the Lion’s Den: Ten Tales of the First Chassidim and Their Ways, by Eliyahu Kitov. It’s a translation of the first volume of Kitov’s 1955 book, Chassidim Ve’anshei Ma’aseh. The book has a beautiful foreword by Naama Nothmann, Eliyahu Kitov’s daughter. She has lived in Johannesburg for many years, and we got to be very friendly when I lived there in the early years of my marriage. Naama is an artist, and she did the painting that graces the book’s cover. (I also have one of her paintings in my dining room, a pastel gouache reminiscent of Chagall, but more beautiful.)
Check out the above link for Naama's beautiful description of Rabbi Nachman Bulman zt"l, Toby's father. You can also read more about the book here.

In belated follow up to your Thursday, March 16, 2006 post "A Reader Provides A Piece In The Puzzle"

Several questions, as I am currently researching The Degel's family.

A. Who was the son in law of the Degel?
R' Dovid or his father R' Yehoshua Heschel?
From what I have read in the past it is R' Dovid.

B. Can anyone identify which Horowitz's these are?
There was one famous Yehoshua Heschel Horowitz living in the times of the Degel, he was the brother of the Ropschitzer Rav R' NZ.
The thing is they weren't Leviim, used their mother's (daughter of R' Itzikl Hamburger) maiden name.

This R. Yehoshua Heschel was the Rav firsr in Yaniv then in Baligrod. It seems his descendents were the Rabbonim in Baligrod, Galicia (suburb of Linsk).

One of the Rabbonim of Baligrod was named R' Moshe Chaim Efraim, and he is listed as "Neched HaDegel" though none one seems to know how he actually is one.

I wonder if this R' Dovid, son in law of the Degel is indeed connected to Baligrod....

I have searched and called, the experts don't seem to have a clue.

MJR: The Degel's son-in-law is R' Dovid. I have never heard of the other person you mention but I am intriqued about the information you noted. Please let me know if you find out anything else. If you would like, please e-mail me and I will put you in touch with a descendent of R' Dovid.
